Braves Shut Down Emeralds; Sweep Season Series

The Gladstone High School girls basketball team scored 33 of the game's first 43 points and cruised to a 42-27 win over the Manistique Emeralds Thursday night in Gladstone.

The Braves swept both games from the Emeralds and improved to 3-7 on the season while Manistique's record dropped to 2-10.

The game was off to a slow start, with the Braves leading just 4-0 midway through the second quarter. It was a 10-7 game before the Braves went on a 15-2 run to end the first half to lead, 25-9 at the half.

"Our goal was to hold them to nine (points) a quarter," Gladstone Coach Andy Cretens said. "We've been giving up double figures in a lot of quarters recently, so that was kind of our our goal, and we surpassed it. We executed really well and defended really well. Towards the end, we didn't do so well and got a little lazy toward the end, but we defended well for three quarters."

Gladstone's biggest lead was 33-10 before the Braves sbstituted freely and the Emeralds knocked down a few shots to finish strong. Marnnea LaFave scored ten points, while Maddie Ahlgren and Megan Crow each added nine for the Braves

Also Thursday, Gladstone's JV team also picked up its first win of the season, pulling out a one-point win on a free throw by Payton Nault.
