Marquette Redmen Boys Win Cross Country Meet


FLAT ROCK---The Marquette Redmen had four of the top seven finishers and won the Barnyard Classic boys cross country race on Thursday at the Beauchamp Farm in Delta County.

The Redmen finished with 32 points to easily win the team title over second-place Gladstone. The Braves, led by medalist Giovanni Mathews, had 65 points for the solid runner-up spot. Menominee was third with 94 points, followed by Rudyard (109 points) and Stephenson (143 points).

Mathews took the top spot by finishing the race in 17 minutes, 2.9 seconds. He was nearly twelve seconds faster than Adam Cavagnetto of Norway, who finished second in 17:14.2.

Marquette’s Colin Vanderschaaf was third (17:23.4), and Gladstone’s Drew Hughes took fourth (17:25.4). Marquette’s Hogan Nemetz rounded out the top five, finishing the race in 17:29.9. The Redmen also had the sixth and seventh place runners, with Moses White (17:33.3) and Luke Janofski (17:47.6) taking those two spots, respectively.

Escanaba finished sixth overall with 174 points. The Eskymos' top runner was Derek Douglas, who finished ninth overall in 17 minutes, 51.8 seconds.

Rapid River finished seventh overall as a team with 186 points. The Rockets' top runner was Matt Snay, who finished 29th in 20:02.9.
