SMART ESKYMOS: Esky Wrestlers Excel In Classes

The Michigan Wrestling Association is praising the work of the best high school wrestling teams and individuals...off the mat.

The Escanaba Eskymos were honored for having the ninth-best team grade point average in the state in Division Two. The Westwood Patriots and five individuals were also honored.

Coach Jeff Wright's Eskymos earned Academic All-State honores after posting an overall team grad point average of 3.64 on a 4.0 scale, which was tied for ninth in D-2 with the Gaylord Blue Devils.

In Division Four, Westwood had a team GPA of 3.23, which was good for eighth amongst the state's small schools.

Indivdually, five Upper Peninsula grapplers were recognized as Academic All-Staters for their work in the classroom: Marquette's Joe Lagrou and Blake Colley; Leo Helppi of Negaunee, Caleb Brown of St. Ignace, and Rocco Carlson of Westwood.
