Sault Ste. Marie Tops Houghton To Win Esky Invite

ESCANABA---The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils defeated the Houghton Gremlins, 2-0, on Saturday, to win the championship of the eight-team Escanaba Elks Invitational.
The scores were 26-24, 25-15.
The eight teams were broken down into two four-team pools, so everybody played three matches. Then six of the eight teams were brought into single-elimination bracket play, with the top two teams receiving byes to the semifinal round.
Gladstone and Menominee both went winless and were the first teams eliminated.
In the quarterfinals, Escanaba beat Stephenson and Negaunee knocked out Bark River-Harris. Then in the semifinals, Sault High swept Escanaba and Houghton took out Negaunee.
