Escanaba Hockey Team Sweeps Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE---The Escanaba High School hockey team picked up two come-from behind victories over the weekend, beating the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils, 7-3 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday, at the Big Bear Arena.
Junior Brayden Martineau followed up his two-goal performance in Tuesday’s narrow loss to Marquette with two more goals in Friday’s win, plus the tying goal in the third period on Saturday.
Another junior, Sawyer LaMarch, also scored twice in Friday’s win, and his older brother (and Martineau’s cousin) Jayger LaMarch added a goal and three assists on Friday.
Martineau had three assists to go along with his two goals on Friday, for a five-point night.
Defenseman Gunner Bourdeau had what turned out to be the game-winning goal in Saturday’s win in the third period. Escanaba trailed Friday’s game, 3-2, in the second period, and was behind 1-0 on Saturday entering the final period.
Sault High had grabbed the 1-0 lead on Saturday with a goal by Evan Hoglund at the 7:49 mark. Randen Blair, Ethan McDonald, and Garrett Gorsuch scored the Soo’s goals in Friday’s game.
Karson Krutina and Trevor Streichert also scored in Friday’s win for the Eskymos.
Escanaba improved to 3-2-0 on the season and will be at home Tuesday night against Negaunee. The Miners mercied Monroe Catholic Central, 10-2, on Saturday, at a tournament in Petoskey.
Sault Ste. Marie fell to 2-4-1.
