WELLS---The Escanaba High School hockey team shook off a slow start and rolled past the Manistique Emeralds, 6-1, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs Friday night at the Wells Sports Complex.
Dakota Maki sniped a top-shelf goal for the Emeralds in the first period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
But Sawayer LaMarch tied the game with 45 seconds left in the period, and then in the second period, his older brother Jayger returned to the lineup after missing Thursday’s game in Kingsford to score an unassisted goal to give Escanaba a 2-1 lead.
Brayden Martineau gave the Eskymos a 3-1 lead with just under six minutes to play in the second period, and then Escanaba put it away with three goals in a span of 3:33 early in the third period.
Sawyer LaMarch scored the first one as he skated up the left wing and ripped a shot off the goal post and past Manistique goalie Alex Noble. Just over a minute later, Jayger LaMarch tipped one past Noble off the feed from his brother. And two minutes after that, Trevor Streichert scored from in close to make it 6-1.
Escanaba goaltender Dylan Ziemke was not overworked, but he did stop a breakway in the third period and ended up with nine saves.
The Eskymos outshot the Emeralds, 37-10, with Noble stopping 31 shots.
Escanaba, which also beat Kingsford on Thursday, 5-2, improved to 9-5-0-1 on the season. Manistique fell to 4-2-1-0 on the season.
