U.P. CHAMPIONS! Gladstone Wrestlers Take Title
MARQUETTE---The Gladstone Braves won the Upper Peninsula wrestling championship on Saturday, taking six individual first place finishes in outdistancing second place Iron Mountain, 212-175. Escanaba was third with 155 points, and Bark River-Harris was fourth with 144. There were 17 teams from across the Upper Peninsula in the daylong event.
The Braves won the Duvall Trophy, named after the longtime Escanaba wrestling coach.
Gladstone's Austin Solis got the ball rolling with a championship at 130 pounds, beating Escanaba's Trevor DeGrand on a 16-0 Tech Fall decision.
The next championship came at 215 pounds, when Hunter Potier defeated Drew Allgeyer of Bark River-Harris/North Central on a tight 11-7 decsion. Then at heavyweight, Gladstone's Brett Boudreai pinned Chris Ricker halfway through the second period to take first place.
It was another Gladstone-Escanaba matchup in the 112-pound final, and again, the Braves came out on top as Eli Terrien outlasted Cade Krueger to win on a 6-4 decision.
The 119 pound championship was also a battle between two solid wrestlers: Gladstone's Drew Hansen and Iron Mountain's Shawn McGuire. Hansen won on a 4-0 decision, handing McGuire just his third loss of the season.
The third Gladstone-Escanaba finals match of the day didn't take long, as the Braves' Michael Brazeau pinned the Eskymos' Charley McInerney in 42 seconds to take the 125 pound bracket.
Iron Mountain's second place finish was fueled by Parker Stroud's championship at 152 pounds, and Akexander Wilson's championship at 103 pounds. The Mountaineers also had three runners-up on the podium.
Escanaba did not have a champion, but finished third in the team score beacuse of four runner-up finishes, as well as three third place finishes. The Eskymos' Jarret Olsen battled at 189 pounds, before losing in his championship match to Ishpeming's Dawson Delongchamp.
Bark River-Harris, a co-op with North Central, had three NCA boys reach the championship round, and they all finished second. Dillon Raab reached a milestone by picking up the 100th win of his career, and he is only a junior. He ended up second, losing to Kingsford's Toby Wilcos in the 145-pound championship match by an 8-6 decision.
Raab's older brother, Wyatt, also battled into the championship match for BR-H/NCA, but was pinned Marquette's Wyatt Kuhlman on a pin with 32 seconds left in the third period.
