BACK TO BACK: Escanaba Tennis Wins GNC Title


KINGSFORD---The Escanaba High School boys tennis team won its second straight Great Northern Conference championship on Friday in dominating fashion Friday, taking seven of the eight flights in the rain-delayed event at Kingsford High School.

The Eskymos set themselves up for a thrilling MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals on the same courts next Wednesday, with a battle looming with Mid Pen Conference champion Negaunee, as well as GNC runners-up Marquette.

On Wednesday, Marquette's Nick Olivier won the #1 singles title over Escanaba's Gunner Dlugas, 6-3, 6-Love. But the Eskymos cruised in every other flight although Connor Smale needed three sets to get the win at #3 singles over Chase Thomsen (6-4, 4-6, 6-1).

Escanaba senior Nate Howes cruised past Marquette's Matt Barsch, 6-2, 6-2.

Escanaba's four doubles teams all continued their season-long dominance.

On the team scoreboard, Escanaba had 46 points. Marquette was second with 24, Menominee was third (17), Kingsford fourth (15). West Iron County fiftth (10), Munising sixth (6 points) and Gladstone (0 points) seventh.

Some matches were finished Thursday before the rains came, and others were canceled on Friday because Munising students could not come because of graduation ceremonies.
